A group of SLFP ministers convened a media briefing at the party headquarters in Colombo, on Wednesday where Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare, S.B. Dissanayake noted that, under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena, steps are being taken to strengthen the party and the alliance.

He went on to further elaborate on plans to expand the alliance, having held discussions with nine other political parties along with four to five other parties that have requested to join the alliance with whom discussions will be held in the future.

He went on to state:

In this manner, we will create a very strong UPFA, and will face the next local government election under the leadership of President Maithripala Sirisena. This will be done with the support of two former presidents.

He further stated:

It is the President who has created an environment of freedom and democracy, for all members to cast cast aside their differences and to unite, in order to provide leadership to the country.

He stated:

The United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party are two different parties and therefore cannot remain together for a long time. Because, if the main two political parties remain together for long, there is the possibility for nationalists to emerge as the opposition, and there is the possibility for those with a terrorist mentality to emerge as the opposition.
