Government to import European locomotives to improve train service

Minister of Transport, Nimal Siripala de Silva at an event was held to present appointment and promotion letters to officers attached to the Technical Division of the Sri Lanka Railways noted that European locomotive engines will be imported to improve the efficiency of the up-country railway service.

The minister further added that it is essential to import a number of European locomotive engines to sustain train services on the up-country line and that a letter has been presented to Cabinet seeking their approval to purchase these these locomotive engines in 2017.

He went on to note that under loans obtained from India, Sri Lanka has received the opportunity to build railway lines, and to purchase locomotive engines as well as compartments. He added that in the future one single company will not be allowed to build railway lines; Cabinet approval has been sough for contracts to be awarded after calling for tenders.

Addressing the officers, he also noted that the the shortage of engineers must somehow be filled and this train issue will be resolved, resulting in no need for a strike or abstention from duties.
