The United Nations Day for Solidarity with Palestine was held in Colombo on Friday evening. The event was organised by the Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine.

The event was graced by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and also saw the participation of the UN resident representative in Sri Lanka, Subinay Nandy, Ministers and MPs and other distinguished guests.

Ambassador of Palestine to Sri Lanka,Dr. Zuhair Hamdallah Zaid stated:

If the international community will continue its rule, will continue closing their eyes, just to say that here is Sri Lanka we should impose sanctions , we should send to Sri Lanka Judges. And if they want to teach the people of Sri Lanka what is human rights, Why don’t they send their judges to Israel? and Why do they have this double standard?

She added:

Here we have people and the government of President Maithripala Sirisena and they have commitment to take care of their issue and they can  achieve the unity of their people.

Miko Peled, an Israeli peace activist who had been advocating for Palestine was presented with a memento at the event.

Miko Peled stated:

The issue of Palestine, I believe requires more than solidarity and I think it is important to have a day of solidarity certainly. But solidarity is not enough, but if we express the solidarity with Palestine on the one hand and conduct business with Israel as usual on the other hand, my friends we are defeating the purpose.
