The landslide warning issued to eight districts due to heavy rainfall is still in effect. The Met Department meanwhile, is forecasting that showers will continue over several parts of the country. It adds that the global El Nino phenomenon is affecting weather patterns in Sri Lanka.
The Met Department says that the inter-monsoonal weather conditions that are prevailing will bring showers or thundershowers to many parts of the country.
The National Building Research organisation has issued landslide warnings for at risk areas in the Badulla, Nuwara-Eliya , Kandy, Kegalle, Ratnapura , Kalutara, Matara and Hambantota districts.
Meanwhile, four houses have been severely damaged due to the overflowing of the Alipothara Oya in Wellawaya, Moneragala.
Residents claim that the river frequently overflows during the rainy season, following the construction of a bund for the Uma Oya Project. A landslide was experienced in the Rockwood Estate in Norwood on Saturday following heavy showers.
Another landslide was also reported on Saturday from the Samanalagama area. Meanwhile, traffic was interrupted for about four hours at the 16th mile post along the Passara – Namunukula road at around 6 a.m. on Sunday following a cut failure.
Meanwhile, our correspondents say the water level of the Castlereagh Reservoir is at 90 percent.
