On September 28, Sri Lanka celebrated 15 years since Susanthika Jayasinghe won the Olympic Silver for the country. An event to felicitate the sprinter, was held on Wednesday October 7 under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.,
A group including the Minister of Sports and other officials attended the event, presided over by the President at the Foundation Institute in Colombo.
The President speaking at the event said:
We discussed the status of sports this morning and the government had decided to immediately commence a national programme that is aimed at reviving sports in the country and we seek the support of all sectors.
He further stated:
In the past there were shortcomings and weaknesses in the sports sector. I am aware of that situation but I will not blame any of the former ministers of sports. I was aware of the circumstances that led to this becasue when I was the Minister of Health, I had to face many difficulties.
He further noted:
If I could have served as the Minister of Health freely and independently during those 5 years, there would have been significant changes in the health sector. The sports sector faced a far more worse situation.
The official website of Susanthika Jayasinghe was launched today and she was also presented with a memento.
