Speaker of the House Karu Jayasuriya has accepted Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe’s request to increase the number of ministries.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickeremesinghe, speaking at the parliament today noted that a National Government has been established. He requested that the number of ministers be increased to 48 and the number of deputy ministers or state ministers be increased to 45 in accordance with the 19th amendment to the constitution, which states that the number of ministers and deputy ministers can be amended in case a national government is formed.
JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake protested against the proposal, raising the argument that a National Government has not been formed. Other opposition MPs including opposition leader R. Sampanthan, Sarath Mayadunne echoed similar remarks.
However speaker Karu Jayasuriya interpreted that the government. that has been formed at present can be identified as a National Government.
