A special discussion is scheduled to take place on Friday evening to address issues surrounding the salary increase of the estate workers.
Commissioner General of Labour M.D.C Amaratunga noted that the discussions will be held under the auspices of the Secretary to the Ministry of Labour.
The trade union action that was launched seeking the Rs.1000 wage hike for estate workers entered its fifth day on Friday. They point out that the wage agreement of the estate workers expired in March.
Protests took place in the central hills over the past few days demanding a wage hike. Estate workers are currently protesting in Poodalu-oya. Our correspondent said that workers attached to five estates are engaged in this protest.
A ‘slowdown’ or a ‘go slow’ protest was staged by estate workers on Friday, as discussions between the trade unions demanding for a wage hike and the employers federation, were unsuccessful.
The ongoing protest has hampered the daily operations at a number of factories.
