Following an extraordinary gazette issued on Friday night, the parliament was dissolved with effect from midnight yesterday.
The parliament was dissolved by President Maithripala Sirisena as per the power vested in him according to the article 70 of the constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and in pursuance of the provisions of section 10 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No.1 of 1981.
The extraordinary gazette issued stated that thereby parliamentary elections will take place on August 17, 2015. The nomination period during which nomination papers will be accepted will begin from July 6, 2015 and end at 12 noon, July 13.
The gazette further states that the new parliament will meet on September 1, 2015.
