The National Programme to obtain one million public signatures for the March 12 Declaration which contains the criteria which should be looked into by political parties when providing nominations commenced at the Independence Square.
The primary objective of the March 12 Movement, comprising of 21 organisations including PAFFREL, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Transparency International, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and the Ceylon Teacher’s Union, is to fulfill an effective duty to create a good political culture in the country.
The March 12 Declaration which was prepared as a preliminary measure to fulfill this objective, includes 8 fundamental criteria that should be taken into account by all political parties when submitting nominations.
According to this Declaration, the March 12th Movement is to tour the country starting Thursday until July 4, urging the public to caste their vote for the party who have submitted their nominations as well as their preferred candidate during the upcoming parliamentary elections.
