United National Party Western Provincial Councilor S.M.Marikkar, speaking while distributing equipment to 7 Sports Clubs in Kolonnawa, stated that 75 percent of Kolonnawa has been cleared of the drug trade.

He added that there are no murders reported from Kolonnawa and that there are no thugs in Kolonnawa. He said the underworld does not operate in Kolonnawa anymore.

The provincial councilor said by February, over 40 small time drug dealers were nabbed, adding that within the next two months, Kolonnawa, which had trassformed in to a drug centre, will be freed from the drug menace. He said once the drug menace is eradicated, many more things can be expected.

Western Provincial Councilor, Susil Kindelpitiya, however, stated that there has been no reduction in drugs in the recent past in Kolonnawa and that there are around 6000 to 7000 persons who use heroin. He added that if there was a reduction, people who find it hard without drugs would be seen on the streets because usually addicts cannot wait without using drugs.

He also noted that heroin is flowing in to Kolomnawa, noting that the rug flow cannot be simply stopped by large operations and without planning.
