A report from Anuradhapura was received with regard to the desecration of a grave site on Sunday, June 14.
The corpse was of a 20-year-old female and a mother of one who was a resident of the Gambirigasweva area in Palugollewa, Anuradhapura. She committed suicide on June 11 owing to a family dispute.
The sister of the female noted that the woman came to Monaragala after she married but returned home after they had a falling out and was living with her mother.
Relatives say that the final rites were held at the Palugollewa Public Cemetery Saturday evening. One relative stated that the body was buried yesterday and after going home that morning, an uncle had found that the body had been exhumed and was found atop the concrete slab.
Information as to who exhumed the corpse has yet to be ascertained and according to police, a pair of earrings on the body had been stolen.
Law prohibits the exhuming of a body from a grave without obtaining prior permission from courts.
