Speaking at an event held in Colombo on Monday June 8 to mark the World Oceans Day, Patali Champika Ranawaka, the Minister of Power and Energy, stated that tenders will be called in September in order to commercialise the gas deposits discovered in the Mannar basin.
The Minister revealed that steps are being taken to tap two of the gas deposits known as Dorado and Barracuda. He further noted that as a first step, all of the Ceylon Electricity Board owned diesel and oil power stations will be converted to gas.
Minister Ranawaka further added that legal provisions are being complied to establish a State Oil Corporation and noted that calls will be made internationally to use the gas resource in Sri Lanka.
