Another suspect in the 2012 murder of retired Grama Niladhari, Pattani Razik in Mundalama, was arrested on Tuesday. Police stated that the suspect was arrested at the Katunayake International Airport, when he returned from overseas.

Razik, who was working as the head of a Non Government Organisation at that time, was abducted in Polonnaruwa on February 11 2010.

Police said at the time that Pattani Razik was abducted while en route from Mundalama to Polonnaruwa, on a work-related matter and after several days after the kidnapping, a group had contacted Pattani Razik’s family and demanded a ransom of Rs.20 million.

The family noted that although they had agreed to pay the ransom, the kidnappers had not contacted them afterwards and one and a half years later, Pattani Razik’s body was discovered in Batticaloa.

The body, which was under the foundation of a home in Batticaloa, was discovered following a statement recorded from one of the persons arrested in connection with the kidnapping. Pattani Razik’s son stated that one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder, served as a management trainee at the Ministry of Resettlement, when the Ministry was under the purview of Minister Rishad Bathiyutheen and that this is confirmed by the bail application the suspect had filed at the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court.

In the bail application, the suspect states that he had met Pattani Razik in Polonnaruwa on February 11, 2010. Notably, this is the same day that Pattani Razik disappeared.

In his bail application, the suspect claims further that at the time he met Pattani Razik, he was accompanied by Minister Rishad Bathiyutheen’s Private Secretary, the Minister’s brother and a police officer attached to the Ministerial Security Division. The suspect claims that the group were travelling in a Land Cruiser SUV, bearing the number plate GK 4520, which belonged to the Ministry of Resettlement.
