The Police on Friday May 29 said that they failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt, over the double homicide of the mother and daughter in Kotakethana , Kahawatte.
The police made this announcement at a press conference held on Friday evening. The three persons accused in the double homicide of a mother and daughter in Kotakethana, Kahawatte in 2012 were acquitted by the Colombo High Court on Thursday.
Tensions broke out as the news reached the residents of Kotakethana. Police used high pressure water cannons to disperse the residents who were behaving in an unruly manner in the Kotakethana town and were met with local retaliating by pelting stones.
Two police officers injured during the tense stand-off that broke out on Thursday continue to receive treatment at the Kahawatte Hospital. Police are yet to make any arrests over the incident. The Embilipitiya – Ratnapura main road which was closed since Thursday evening was re-opened on Friday morning.
