Russian President Vladimir Putin took to the ice on Saturday (May 16) in Sochi along with other officials, businessmen and athletes in a match of the Night Hockey League (NHL) – a union of amateur ice-hockey clubs.
Alongside the Russian leader played defense minister Sergei Shoigu, deputy PM Arkady Dvorkovich while Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev just watched the game.
The audience cheered as Putin scored the first goal. According to the Russian ITAR-TASS news agency, he scored six goals throughout the game. However Russia Today puts the number of goals scored by Putin at eight and said the final score was 18:6 in favour of the President’s team.
The Night Hockey League was created on President Putin’s initiative four years ago and its members gather in Sochi to compete in the tournament.
This time all players had number “70” on their uniforms as the game was devoted to the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Union victory over Nazi Germany.
