Due to strong winds that blew across the Kahambiliyawa and Palapolawewa villages in Polonnaruwa on the evening of Monday, May 3, a number of houses were destroyed. According to reports, it is noted that over 15 homes were damaged in both areas.
A resident of the area stated that the winds blew for about five minutes around 4.45 p.m.
During the Yala Season last year, the farmlands were not available, the people in this area were also victims of floods. As the inclement weather battered their homes, the residents requested officials to help them rebuild their homes.
Another resident in the area stated that their roof was blown away after three strong gusts.
He stated that there were around ten to fifteen people inside the house but they had escaped injury. They also stated that they moved into the house two weeks ago. The house consisted of 52 roofing sheets each ten by eight feet. Only one such sheet was salvaged.
