Chamal Rajapaksa asks Premajayantha to resolve issue surrounding position of Opposition Leader

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday , Chamal Rajapaksa made a comment in response to a question raised by MP Kumara Welgama.

He asked the General Secretary of the UPFA and its members, to discuss amongst themselves, the issue surrounding the position of the opposition leader, and to inform him of their decision.

UPFA MP Kumara Welgama noted that they await the decision on the leadership of the opposition as they have listed the affidavits of a majority of opposition Members of Parliament citing that the Leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna be appointed as the Leader of the opposition.

UPFA MP Bandula Gunawardena noted that they have not been able to convene a proper opposition meeting over this issue of national importance. A request was made that the former Leader of the House who was able to face any situation, be appointed as the Opposition Leader in order to face this situation and to also maintain a healthy democracy and to safeguard it.

Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva stated that he will respect the decision.He stated:

Therefore if wrong facts are supposed to be presented to take the position of Opposition leader, so be it. Do not stab us in the back.

Finally, Chamal Rajapaksa noted that as the majority of the SLFPers are in the position, Susil Premajayantha need to work together under one consensus.  Therefore a proposal has been made to Susil Premajayantha to discuss this matter with all the MPs and resolve this issue and thereby nominate a person to.
