Parliament, on Tuesday, March 17, debated on the alleged fraud carried out in the recent issuance of Treasury Bonds.
Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva speaking in Parliament on Tuesday raised a question ”One hunred and twenty four (124) million US dollars was taken out from the reserves of the Central Bank? Was it the governor or someone else who authorised this transaction?”
Meanwhile JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake noted that the majority of the people who cast their franchise in order to topple the Rajapaksa regime, never expected a situation of this nature to arise, in such a short period of time. He added that this transaction is an extension of the conduct similar to the previous regime.
However, Prime Minister Ranil Wikremesinghe said that Arjuna Mahendran has informed him that he is on leave since last Monday, and has notified him that he will not engage in official duties until the investigations are concluded.
The Prime Minister went on to note that by taking leave, the governor has created an environment for a just and impartial inquiry to be conducted.
