Protests erupted against Chief Justice Mohan Peiris on Wednesday opposite the Supreme Court in Hulftsdorp.
According to our correspondent, a large number of lawyers participated in the protest alongside civil society activists and trade union activists. The protesters called on Chief Justice Mohan Peiris to resign from his position.
Speaking before the media, Attorney-at-Law J.C. Weliamuna stated that the current government which analysed the manner in which Former Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake was impeached, had come to a conclusion that the proper procedures had not been followed during the impeachment and as a result the new government does not recognise Mohan Peiris as the Chief Justice.
The Attorney-at-Law went on to state that they believe that as a result of this Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake would be reinstated as the Chief Justice with effect from Wednesday.
Shirani Bandaranayake served as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka from May 2011 – till she was impeached by the previous administration in January 2013. Allegations of financial irregularities were among the charges levelled against her before she was impeached. Her controversial impeachment drew much criticism and concern.
In the latest development, Dr. Shirani Banadaranayake arrrived at the Supreme Court Premises on Wednesday afternoon..
