TNA Parliamentarian P. Ariyanethran says that the party supported Sarath Fonseka at the last presidential election after obtaining a written promise.
He made this statement at a meeting held in Batticaloa on Sunday.
It is said that an election will be held soon. It is said it will be a Presidential election. At the last Presidential Election, the Tamil National Alliance supported Sarath Fonseka.
“There is a view among our people and our politicians that this decision was wrong. There is some doubt. But, in the run-up to that election, we presented a set of proposals to the two main candidates, the incumbent president and Sarath Fonseka. The primary demand was that we be allowed to live with freedom and independence in a merged Northern and Eastern Province. Although the current President was for this proposal, he said he would not sign. He said he would implement it following his victory. Sarath Fonseka asked for three days to consider the proposal and following this not only him but Ranil Wickremesinghe too signed this proposal. But they requested that this not be revealed to the media or anyone else, for any reason whatsoever. All twenty two people in the Tamil National Alliance saw this document. We pledged our support after receiving a written promise. Following the announcement of the Presidential election this time, we will discuss the matter as a collective and reach a decision.”
