The Minister of Higher Education who was to declare open a women’s hostel at the Sabaragamuwa University on Sunday, was accosted by a group of students at the Pambahinna Junction en route, whence they asked the Minister to resolve their demands.
The students did not allow Minister S.B. Dissanayake to proceed to the campus and staged a demonstration blocking the road. Although the Minister did eventually enter the campus and declare open the hostel, none of the students attended the event.
Speaking at event Minister S.B. Dissanayake made following views:
“Because of the election we are a little quiet at present. If not we would have given them some good treatment. We are a little silent these days because there is an election.”
He added: “We are not afraid of these people on stages as much as we are afraid of ants or even leeches. They are just flies.”
