The Disaster Management Centre says that over 2.5 million people belonging to over 575,000 families are suffering due to the severe drought prevalent in 14 districts in the country.
Its official website stated that in the Eastern Province alone an excess of 400,000 persons belonging to over 100,000 families are suffering due to the drought.
According to DMC reports 31,278 individuals in the Ampara district have been affected by the drought.
This number rises to 252, 673 in the Batticaloa district.
Meanwhile, the public response to the Sirasa/Shakthi Sahana Yathra programme, organised by the Capital Maharaja Organisation Limited, to provide relief for people in drought stricken areas has been overwhelming.
Donations are being collected at three locations, namely the MTV/MBC Head Office at Braybrooke Place, Colombo, the MTV/MBC Studio Complex in Depanama, Pannipitiya or Stein Studios in Ratmalana
Accepting of donations have now commenced at these locations. Large numbers were seen drawing to these location with their donations on Friday. Anyone can assist in this venture by donating essential items including bottled water, rice, dhal, sugar, milk powder and canned fish.
Plans have also been made to collect donations from the public residing outstation. There is an opportunity for you to support the Sirasa Shakthi Sahana Yathra by providing lorries to transport the donations collected, to the affected areas.
