The month-long waste disposal dilemma at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle, was finally resolved on Monday. The Mayor of Galle has made a promise in writing to dispose of the waste collected at the hospital.
The premises of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital have been unhygienic for several days owing to the collection of waste.The Galle Municipal Council had decided not to dispose of waste from the hospital owing to a difference of opinion with the hospital’s administration.
On Monday, hospital staff refrained from normal functions including the admitting of patients in protest.
The Mayor of Galle then arrived at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and intervened to resolve the matter.Although the problem has been resolved, the Mayor of Galle noted that the Municipal Council would not dispose of clinical waste.
Our reporter says that many patients who visited the hospital on Monday morning for treatment, were inconvenienced as a result of the issue.
