The Western Provincial Council convened on  Tuesday morning. The provincial council convened under the aegis of Chairman Sunil Wijeratne.

UNP Western Provincial Councillor, S.M. Marikkar made his maiden address to the council on Tuesday.

In his maiden speech, S.M. Marikkar said: “We should not allow any extremist organisation or even a place of worship to be above all, for any reason. We must not allow anyone to deprive people of the freedom to live in Sri Lanka while upholding their communal and religious identity. In 1948, we gained independence banded together as one and not divided as individuals. It is my belief that no country can move forward when it is divided.”

Government councillors expressed their opposition on Tuesday when UNP councillor Mujibur Rahman presented a proposal on the recent incident in Beruwala and Aluthgama.

Chairman Sunil Wijeyratne adjourned the council for ten minutes owing to the tension. However, when the council re-convened, tensions flared again. The council was later adjourned until July 22.
