Night races in Kandy: Mahanayake theros write to the President

The Mahanayake theros have called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to cancel the night races that are scheduled to be held in Kandy on June 27 and 28.

The letter, which was addressed to the President, bore the signatures of the Manhanayake of the Asgiri chapter Most Ven. Udugama Sri Budhha Rakkitha thera, the Mahanayake of the Amarapura Sanga Sabhawa, Most Ven. Davuldena Gnanissara thera, the Mahanayake of the Ramanya sect.  the Most Ven. Napane Pemasiri thera and the Anunayake of the Malwathu Chapter Most Venerable Niyangoda Vijithasiri thero.

The Mahanayaka theros note that the sacred city of Kandy is the resting place of the sacred relics of Lord Buddha, as well as a city which contains many historical places of worship.

Conducting such an event in such a city which has also been named a UNESCO heritage site causes harm to the pride of the city, it was pointed out.
