The United National Party presented a No Confidence Motion against the government in Parliament  on Tuesday citing the government’s inability to regulate and eradicate the drug menace in the country. The motion was presented by UNP Parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera.

Presenting the motion, MP Joseph Michael Perera said that the drug menace has spread to every nook and cranny of the country. He added that the government had also failed to properly investigate allegations of drug smuggling.

Furthermore, he noted that the government had failed to ensure the safety and security of the people.

Leader of the House Minister, Nimal Siripala de Silva, meanwhile rejected these allegations and pointed out that many raids have been conducted in the recent past and that the law is being enforced against those responsible.

Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara meanwhile noted that while a drug menace does exist in the country, steps are being taken to address the problem. He added that a government cannot be toppled for these reasons.
