President Mahinda Rajapaksa was declared open the section of Southern Expressway that extends from Galle to Matara.
Phase two of the Southern Expressway which is 32 kilometres long was funded by the Exim Bank of China at a cost of 180 million US dollars. or Rs.18 billion Rupees.
Incidentally, phase two consists of four lanes and vehicles can drive up to speeds of 100 kilometres per hour.
The Southern Expressway is Sri Lanka’s first Expressway. With the opening of the second phase, the 126 kilometre long expressway will link Colombo and Matara.
Construction on the expressway began in 2006 and the first phase from Kottawa to Pinnaduwa in Galle was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2011.
