A man and woman who abandoned their one-month old infant have been arrested in Suduhumpola, Kandy.

The infant was found abandoned near a home in Suduhumpola, Kandy at dawn on Saturday.

The infant was found by the owner of the home who heard the baby’s cries in the morning.

Officers of the Kandy Police arrived at the location and took the child into protective custody, after making inquiries.

The Police Media Unit said that a suspicious couple in the vicinity was arrested based on information that came to light following these inquiries.

When the couple was interrogated, they revealed that they were in fact the parents and that they had abandoned the infant.

The police say that the parents, who are employed by a garment factory in Colombo, are 23 and 24 years old.

They are unmarried residents of Kotagahawaththa in Hatton.

The Kandy Magistrate ordered that the infant be housed at the State Children’s Home in Peradeniya and that the parents be placed in remand custody.
