President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is on an official visit to the Middle East met with Palestinian leader Mahamoud Abbas on Monday.
While the two leaders emphasised Sri Lanka’s and Palestine’s long-outstanding friendship, the Palestinian leader pointed out that this relationship will only grow further.
According to the Presidential Media Unit, the Palestinian leader had conveyed his gratitude to President Rajapaksa for the support rendered by him for the Palestine Movement at the UN.
Expressing his hope of seeing the birth of the independent kingdom of Palestine, President Rajapaksa stated that the relations between the two countries would continue to strengthen from year to year. At the meeting with his Palestinian counterpart, President Mahinda Rajapaksa was awarded with the ‘Palestinian Star’, the highest honour the Palestinian Government awards a person.
The President was awarded this honour in admiration of the long term cooperation between Sri Lanka and Palestine. Receiving the Palestinian Star, President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that he is obligated to extend his full cooperation to the Palestinian Government and the amiable Palestinian people.
During his visit President Rajapaksa took part in many activities such as planting a tree in the Betunia Municipality Park in Ramallah.
