Caterer arrested after Horana food poisoning

A caterer in the Mattegoda area in Kittawa was taken into custody Thursday in connection with the food poisoning incident that was reported in  Horana.

The catering services were also sealed Thursday.

Health officials say that samples obtained from the catering company have been submitted to the laboratory for further testing.

Issuing a communique, Dr. Amal Harsha Silva, health director of the Western Province and additional secretary of the Ministry of Health, said that they suspect that the food poisoning may have been caused by a microorganism or poison in the chicken that was consumed.

More than 350 persons attached to a garment factory in the Poruwadanda area in Horana suffered from food poisoning after consuming food at an event held Wednesday night.

Dr. Rasika Liyanage, acting medical director of the Homagama Base Hospital, said that around 150 persons were admitted to the hospital.

Furthermore, 200 persons were also admitted to the Horana Base Hospital. Thamara Kalubowila, medical director of the Horana Hospital said that these individuals were admitted following symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea.
