Both government and opposition politicians commented on the topic of Heroin at a number of events held on Sunday.

Leader of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thero stated,

“If you find someone who possesses 200 grammes of Heroin, imprison him for life, that is good. If it was Singapore he would be executed. However, when 260 kilogrammes of heroin are imported then it receives state patronage. Recently a coordinating secretary in the prime minister’s staff came forward and stated that he had issued a letter in order to clear some goods belonging to a friend and not to clear drugs.”

Speaking further Ven. Sobitha Thero asked how the state law being enacted, even though the  involvement of the coordinating  officer was clear, and added that they will be waiting to see if the country’s courts are ad-hoc or whether they are just, ethical and respectable.
If the charges that I am levelling are baseless then the prime minister can arrest Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thero on charges of defamation.
Politburo member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), MP Vijitha Herath also expressed his views,
One individual who testified stated that a certain minister was involved. There was a phone call by that ‘certain minister’ in connection to the latest containers, we call on the government to investigate the matter and inform the public.
“In March this year two containers of ethanol were taken into custody. the fact that a politician was directly involved in importing and attempting to clear the goods created quite a buzz. However, up to date the government has not taken a firm decision in this regard and punished anyone. On the 28th  of August a container of potatoes was taken into custody, drugs were discovered within this container as well. Two hundred and sixty one (261)  kilogrammes of drugs worth over 2.6 billion rupees was discovered. A coordinating secretary of the prime minister is clearly involved in this racket. While a letter was sent to exempt the container from taxes, the prime minister who says that the Parliament is supreme only says that he does not know anything.”

Speaking of the matter Project Minister of Ports, Highways and Shipping, Rohitha Abeygunawardene  also expressed his view saying that various drug raids have been conducted.

He added to this,
No matter who is involved in the drug trade be it the President or the government or anyone else, they should be punished.
