Mixed views were expressed in various forums on Thursday on the scandal surrounding the Prime Minister.

Western Provincial Councilor, Udaya Gamanpila expressed these views;

“The Heroin trade in this country cannot continue without political patronage. It is in this backdrop that the Coordinating Secretary of the Prime Minister wrote a letter to the Customs Department to release a container of Heroin under the guise of household appliances and other items. The secretary to the Ministry of Buddha  Sasana says that this Coordinating Secretary was asked to to resign, he says he resigned. Now he is no more. If an independent investigations is not conducted there will be a stain on the post of Prime Minister in the country.”

Hemakumara Nanayakkara expressed these thoughts;

“Is this an internal conflict or is it something else? The seniors in the government are trying to exploit this situation. We know that there are four to five people who are eyeing the post of Prime Minister with greed. What they want to do is to put D.M. Jayaratna in a difficult situation, insult him and make him vacate his position. A few of them are quarreling to sit on his chair.”

Adviser of United Bikku Front, Ven. Girambe Ananda Thero shared these views;

“If a country is to be governed properly there should be a strong opposition. The current government has knowingly weakened the opposition, they have lured members of the opposition to their side with money and ministerial positions. The government has weakened the opposition and they are ruling the country as they wish. There is no law in the country today.”
