COLOMBO (News 1st) - Insurance companies have decided to introduce digital motor insurance cards in place of traditional motor insurance certificates.
The decision has been taken jointly by the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka, the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka, and other stakeholders in the insurance sector.
The Inspector General of Police has already informed all police stations and issued the necessary instructions in this regard.
Accordingly, motor insurance coverage will now be provided in three ways: a digital motor insurance card, a printed certificate issued only upon request of the policyholder and a digital insurance card delivered to the policyholder via a mobile phone application.
Meanwhile, the police stated that a National Insurance Verification System has also been introduced alongside the digital insurance system.
The system can be accessed through several methods to verify the validity of motor insurance.
Accordingly, by dialing 1338 from any mobile network and entering the vehicle number or insurance certificate number, the current status of the insurance policy can be checked.
In addition, users can send the vehicle number or insurance policy number via SMS to *1338#, after which the status of the insurance policy will be instantly sent as a reply message.
