COLOMBO (News 1st): A Member of Parliament has been appointed to each district as the District Health Coordinating Officer, in a move to strengthen the coordination of the healthcare system.
The Ministry of Health and Media, issuing a statement, noted that the relevant cabinet paper has also received the cabinet approval.
The primary objective of this serves to enhance efficient disease prevention and treatment services while overcoming the coordination weaknesses existing between health institutions controlled by the Central Government and Provincial Governments.
Among the proposed roles and responsibilities for District Coordinating Officers are:
Identifying and prioritizing district-level health needs by giving prominence to public participation,
Facilitating the integration of those needs with national and provincial health plans,
Coordinating the efficient use of resources between line ministry and provincial health institutions,
Identifying priority projects and recommending them to the Ministry,
And monitoring the progress of currently active projects to assist in their successful completion within the scheduled timeframe.
