COLOMBO (News 1st); The Presidential Commission of Inquiry into all coal transactions in the country is set to begin its work next week.
Work is currently underway to set up an office in Colombo for this purpose.
A fully-fledged Presidential Commission of Inquiry was appointed yesterday under the chairmanship of Supreme Court Justice Gihan Kulatunga to investigate all coal transactions in the country.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed the Commission under Section 2 of the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry Act No. 07 of 1978, as amended by the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry (Special Provisions) Act No. 04 of 1978.
The other members of the Commission are Court of Appeal Judge Aditya Patabendige and High Court Judge Sanjeewa Somaratne.
Former Secretary to the State Ministry, P.V. Bandulasena, is also associated with the process.
The main task of the Commission is to investigate whether any irregularities or illegal activities took place in the import of coal and the generation of electricity in Sri Lanka by the government-owned Coal Private Limited or its successors, from the start of coal-based power generation in the country up to April 16, 2026.
