COLOMBO (News 1st): Namal Rajapaksa and Shiranthi Rajapaksa have been summoned today to the Police Financial Crimes Division (FCID) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The CID confirmed that Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, is scheduled to appear before the FCID at 9:30 AM today.
She has been summoned by the FCID to record a statement regarding investigations into financial irregularities involving an account operated under the name ‘Siriliya’.
An investigation into this account was originally launched during the Good Governance administration, focusing on suspicious transactions that took place while Mahinda Rajapaksa was President.
During Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency, the ‘Siriliya’ account was opened at the Suduwella branch of a state bank as a joint account belonging to Shiranthi Rajapaksa and two others.
Notably, the National Identity Card number recorded for Shiranthi Rajapaksa in this account was 222 222 222V.
The account is alleged to have been used for multiple suspicious financial transactions.
On 1 June 2015, investigators obtained a statement from Shiranthi Rajapaksa at the then Speaker’s official residence regarding these transactions.
Meanwhile, the 'Siriliya' organization has recently come under renewed scrutiny, as fresh allegations have surfaced linking it to aspects of the Wassim Thajudeen murder investigation.
Shiranthi Rajapaksa had earlier been notified to appear and provide a statement on the 27th of January, however had previously requested a postponement of her original appearance, which was subsequently granted.
Meanwhile, Namal Rajapaksa, who had earlier sought a one-week extension, is due to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department today.
The CID confirmed he is expected to arrive this morning.
He has been summoned for an inquiry regarding alleged associations with “Kehhelbaddara Padme”, a member of an organized criminal group currently in detention.
