COLOMBO (News 1st); Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya, the Captain Pilot who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Lunuwila humanitarian mission, has been posthumously promoted to the rank of Group Captain, a gesture that reflects the nation’s highest respect for his exemplary service and unwavering dedication to duty.
The tragedy unfolded during the weekend when a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Bell 212 helicopter, engaged in delivering essential supplies to flood-affected communities, was forced to make an emergency landing near the Lunuwila Bridge.
The aircraft was on a critical mission to distribute dry and fresh rations to families devastated by severe flooding.
Onboard were five Air Force personnel, including two pilots.
With the assistance of local residents, all injured crew members were swiftly evacuated and transferred to Maravila Base Hospital. Despite the tireless efforts of medical teams, Captain Pilot Wing Commander Siyambalapitiya succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of courage and selflessness.
A highly experienced aviator, Siyambalapitiya had logged over 3,000 flying hours during his distinguished career. The Co-Pilot and three other crew members survived and are currently receiving medical care.
Under the directives of Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, a Board of Inquiry has been appointed to investigate the incident.
Meanwhile, the SLAF and the nation mourn the loss of a true hero who gave his life in service to others.
