COLOMBO (News 1st); A grim discovery has emerged from the remote hills of Minipe, where Udawatte Nelum Mal Village was struck by a catastrophic landslide on November 27.
The scale of devastation is staggering: of the 16 houses in the village, 12 were completely obliterated, leaving families buried under tons of earth.
For days, the village remained cut off from the outside world. Flash floods and cascading landslides made it impossible for even military rescue teams to reach the area.
This morning, after an arduous journey, authorites reached the location, revealing the heartbreaking aftermath.
Authorities and locals have so far recovered 22 bodies from the rubble.
It is believed that around 30 people were in the village at the time of the disaster.
The recovered bodies have been moved to the local hospital for identification.
Rescue teams continue their search, braving treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather.
