COLOMBO (News 1st); The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a suspect accused of aiding and abetting a massive 'Urumaya' deed certificate scam that defrauded hundreds of victims in the Eastern Province.

According to police, the suspect allegedly assisted the main perpetrator in a scheme that promised 'Urumaya' certificates in exchange for payments ranging between Rs. 400,000 and Rs. 500,000 per person.

Investigations have revealed that 164 individuals from Kalmunai were swindled under this pretext.

Further inquiries uncovered that the suspect, a resident of Maharagama, had over Rs. 15 million deposited into his bank account as part of the fraudulent operation.

Authorities also discovered that around 50 victims were taken to the Sirikotha headquarters during the last presidential election period.

The main suspect—a woman from Matale—was previously arrested.

She is accused of orchestrating the fraud and misappropriating an estimated Rs. 84 million.

The newly arrested suspect is expected to be produced before court.
