Sri Lanka Navy Arrests 78 For Illegal Fishing

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Navy apprehended seventy-eight (78) individuals engaged in illegal fishing activities over the past two weeks.

The Navy said the operation also resulted in the seizure of 35 dinghie boats and a multi-day fishing trawler, unauthorized fishing nets, explosives, and equipment used for prohibited fishing methods.

The Sri Lanka Navy carries out regular operations to curb the harmful effects of illegal fishing practices on the marine ecosystem, while also supporting the promotion of sustainable and lawful fishing activities.

The persons along with unauthorized items and fishing boats held in these operations were handed over to the respective Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department offices in Trincomalee, Sampoor, Verugal, Cod Bay, Kuchchaweli, Kinniya, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, Kalmunai, and Jaffna for further legal action.
