COLOMBO (News 1st) - Today marks the 159th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Police.

This year’s commemoration is held under the theme “Uphold the Law, Value Peace.”

The main ceremony will take place this afternoon at the Police Field Force Headquarters, under the patronage of the President.

The establishment of an organized police service in Sri Lanka is credited to the British.

The service began in 1797 with the appointment of a Police Commissioner in Colombo Fort.

In 1806, under Regulation No. 6, the British formally structured the Police Department and extended its administration to rural areas.

With the enactment of the Police Ordinance No. 16 of 1865, the Sri Lanka Police Service was officially established on September 3, 1866 — a service that has devoted 159 years to the people of this nation.

Sir George William Robert Campbell holds the distinction of being the first Inspector General of Police in Sri Lanka.

Throughout the nation’s social, economic, political, and cultural milestones, the Sri Lanka Police have played a vital role.

Countless officers have laid down their lives in the pursuit of peace and the protection of democracy.

To date, 3,090 police officers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in service to that noble cause.

Day and night, the Police remain committed to combating narcotics, organized crime, and gang activity, maintaining order in times of unrest, and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.

Today, the service continues to evolve, embracing modern technology to deliver a more people-centered approach.

The Police have also taken steps to strengthen their independence, striving to remain free from political interference.

As in the past, today too, the Sri Lanka Police stand as a steadfast beacon — dedicated to upholding law and safeguarding peace for the people of the nation.
