COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, currently in remand custody, was escorted to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption this (3) morning, following a court order requiring his statement in connection with a controversial sand excavation project.
The move comes after the Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued a directive compelling Senaratne to appear before the commission over allegations that a sand mining contract at the Kirinda fisheries harbour was awarded to a Korean company, resulting in a reported loss of over Rs. 20 million to the state.
Senaratne, who had previously failed to comply with court summons, was remanded on August 29 by Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama until September 9.
The court had instructed prison authorities to ensure Senaratne was presented before the commission to provide his statement regarding the matter.
