Landmine Clearance Accelerated In Former War Zones

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Urban Development, Construction and Housing states that the process of clearing landmines buried in various parts of the country during the war has been expedited.

Additional Secretary to the Ministry, M. M. Naimudeen, said that landmine clearance operations have been carried out for more than two decades with the support of both local and international organisations.

So far, over 1,300 square kilometres of land in the Northern, Eastern, and North Central provinces have been cleared of landmines.

The remaining land area requiring clearance amounts to 22.7 square kilometres.

According to the Ministry, 980,900 people have been resettled in areas cleared of landmines.
