COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe will continue to receive treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital for at least another day or two, according to Deputy Director Dr. Rukshan Bellana.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Bellana stated that a team of specialists had examined Wickremesinghe this morning and recommended continued ICU care.
He emphasized that the former president is no longer a detainee and is now a free citizen, with full access to his personal medical team.
Dr. Bellana clarified that the hospital’s role was limited to providing emergency care, and that the decision to admit Wickremesinghe was based on a referral from the Prison Hospital, not any political arrangement. “I did not organize anything. This was not coordinated by me or the ICU,” he said.
When questioned about his alleged political affiliation with the United National Party (UNP) as the North Colombo organizer, Dr. Bellana denied any wrongdoing. “Yes, my photo was published claiming I accepted a UNP position. The Election Commission even sent me a letter and conducted an inquiry. But I was cleared—there were no charges,” he said.
He further stated, “We don’t need politics. We don’t serve parties. When Ranil Wickremesinghe came in, we gave him the best care. If someone else came in and we didn’t do the same, that would be the real issue.”
On the topic of surgery, Dr. Bellana confirmed that Wickremesinghe may require a bypass or another procedure, and that it should be done soon to avoid complications. “The acute dehydration and related issues are now gradually improving due to treatment,” he said.
