COLOMBO (News 1st); The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by the Minister of Fisheries, for Sri Lanka to sign a regional action plan aimed at combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Bay of Bengal.
This initiative follows the International Action Plan adopted in 2001 by member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to restore depleted fish stocks and ensure global food security. Sri Lanka had already developed a national action plan in line with this global framework.
Now, in collaboration with other member states of the Intergovernmental Organization, Sri Lanka will join Bangladesh, India, and the Maldives in signing a regional action plan.
