Gunman, Accomplice In Failed Assassination Attempt Arrested

COLOMBO (News 1st) Two suspects have been arrested in connection with an attempted shooting targeting a businessman in the Kapugama area, police confirmed.

The arrests were made in Wellampitiya and Ganemulla, following intelligence received by investigators. The suspects, aged 28 and 47, are residents of Wellampitiya and Peliyagoda, respectively.

According to police, the shooting was carried out on August 3 using a T-56 assault rifle, and was allegedly orchestrated under the instructions of organized criminals residing overseas. The gunman and the motorcycle rider involved in the attack have both been taken into custody.

Investigators also recovered the motorcycle, helmet, and face mask used in the attack, abandoned in the Yatiyana area.

The victim, a 48-year-old businessman, survived the attack. 

The case is now being handled by the Matara Division Criminal Investigation Unit, which is conducting further inquiries into the suspects’ connections to international crime networks.
