COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka has formally submitted its application to join the BRICS alliance, signaling a strategic move to deepen economic cooperation and global partnerships.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ruwan Ranasinghe, emphasized the significance of BRICS membership for Sri Lanka’s growth trajectory, particularly in the context of expanding trade and tourism.

“BRICS represents a vital opportunity for Sri Lanka as a strategically located nation in the South Indian Ocean,” Ranasinghe stated. “We are looking forward to strengthening our economic relationships and leveraging our free trade agreements, including those with the European Union.”

Sri Lanka currently benefits from GSP+ tax concessions and has access to over 7,000 products under its FTA with India, making it an attractive hub for international trade. The Deputy Minister highlighted that BRICS membership would allow member nations to enjoy these benefits through Sri Lanka’s platform.

On the tourism front, Ranasinghe noted a surge in arrivals, particularly from Russia, with the South Coast beaches becoming a hotspot for Russian travelers. He also pointed out that Russian entrepreneurs have begun investing in tourism-related enterprises in Sri Lanka.

Addressing misconceptions, Ranasinghe clarified that Sri Lanka is not a seasonal destination. “As a tropical island, Sri Lanka offers year-round attractions—from tea gardens and national parks to whale and dolphin watching. Our warm hospitality is a key reason why Russian tourists love visiting.”
