Power Cuts will increase if Coal is not received

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Lanka Coal (Pvt) Limited said that its supplier has expressed the availability to supply coal to Sri Lanka. 

A senior official at Lanka Coal (Pvt) Ltd speaking to News 1st said that the existing dollar crisis is an obstacle to importing coal to the country. 

Lanka Coal (Pvt) Ltd. said that 7,500 MT of coal is needed daily to operate all three units of the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Norochcholai.

A senior spokesperson at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) pointed out that if sufficient stocks of coal are not received, the period of daily power cuts will be increased.

He added that Generator Two of the Norochcholai Power Plant which is under repair will take another month to be added to the National Grid.
