Justice Tillakaratne's reasons to refuse bail to Bond Scam defendants

Colombo (News 1st); The Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar on Thursday (01) by a majority decision ordered to release on bail 08 defendants in the Central Bank Treasury Bond Scam that took place on the 29th of March 2016.

Chairman of the bench Justice Damith Thotawatte and Justice Mohamed Isadeen decided to grant bail to the defendants, however, Justice Manjula Tillakaratne decided to reject the bail application. Justice Manjula Tillakaratne in his order noted there is no provision in the Bail Act in order to grant bail to the defendants who are under the Public Property Act. Further, Justice Tillakaratne also pointed out that the court has not authority to grant bail on the defendants without the approval of the Attorney General as per the articles of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.
