COLOMBO (News1st): One person was killed after an earth embankment collapsed on him in Galewela due to adverse weather on Tuesday, the disaster management said. The deceased has been identified as an 86-year old. A woman who sustained injuries in the incident has been admitted to the Dambulla Base Hospital. The meteorology department has said that showers exceeding 100 mm (four inches) can be expected in the Eastern and Uva Provinces and in the Matale and Nuwara Eliya Districts. Heavy downpours had spiked water levels of the Mahaweli River in Manampitiya causing floods in nearby areas. The spill gates of the Rajanganaya, Kalugal Oya and Morana Reservoirs had been opened during the day to cope with rising water levels.
